Mughal emperor Akbar, the third in the line of Babur, who ruled from 1556 to 1605, is portrayed here in profile.

In Akbar-nama, an authentic record of his life-events and likeness, Akbar has been depicted more than once hunting a lion. Here he is quite friendly with the animal, or rather holds out to it his necklace as if a monarch paying his reverence to another whose majesty rules alike the world of the wild.

The portrayed figure represents an Akbar of elderly days. The simplicity of Akbar's attire was a characteristic aspect of his lifestyle, which the artist has truly captured.
