Pt. Ajay Pohankar is undoubtedly one of the most senior classical vocalists of the country. He has been a child prodigy of the country, singing since the age of 10 in most of the prestigious concerts of the country. A vocalist of the Kirana gharana, he learnt the art from his scholar musicologist mother Dr. Susheela Pohankar. Pt. Ajay Pohankar has been influenced by Ustad Amir Khan in his singing, since he was introduced to the world of classical music by the maestro Ustad Amir Khan himself. On his recommendation Pt. Ajay Pohankar at a tender age of 10 was called for the Mumbai conference in 1958.
Since then he has been singing for nearly four decades, an era which saw greats like Pt. Omkarnath Thakur, Ustad Amir Khan, Hirabai Barodekar, Ustad Salamat Nazakat and many other legends; they all saw this young boy singing amidst them in conferences all over the Country. These maestros were spellbound at his god-gifted talent and were in awe of the child prodigy even then. Thus Pt. Ajay Pohankar became the most sought-after name in the world of Indian classical music, and for the last 45 years has been mesmerising audiences in India and abroad. His thumris above all are considered a treat by many maestros. This volume of Sangeet Sartaj presents excerpts of his live concerts held during these years. Pt. Ajay Pohankar is truly a maestro with a voice that is considered one of the finest in the country.
