Today, Indian Classical Music exhibits the colours of imminent change more markedly than ever before. While on the one hand, the great focus on heritage in the eighties and nineties has served to highlight the traditional finesse within art into its powerful field. The Gramophone Company of India Ltd. (GCIL) has enjoyed the unique dis- tinction of documenting and owning the tradition of Indian Classical Music in this century, capturing the decades of growth, change, innovation and genius. GCIL has pioneered innovative concepts like Jugalbandi, Indo-Western Classical Fusion, New Age Music and Indo-Jazz Fusion. Beyond Barriers is a bold step by HMV in the experimental direction, which has created waves in the national and international markets. Indian Classical flute legend Hariprasad Chaurasia, one of India's master innovators, comes togeth- er with the Indian Jazz wizard Louis Banks, percussionist Shiv Mani, tabla mae- stro Sabir Khan and vocalist Shankar Mahadevan to create a two-hour experi- ence (Vol. 1 & 2) of the fusing together of East and West, Classical and Jazz.
Both Indian Classical and Western Jazz systems are built on the concept of improvisation or on the spot composition extending from themes. Raga Yaman (Vol. 1), perhaps the most popular of Indian Ragas, followed by Raga Kafi (Vol. 2), are taken as themes for the maestros to weave a brilliant variety of improvi- sational melodic and rhythmic passages. The experiment demonstrated the unity of music in different systems and their ability to come together to give a new kind of joy and experience a breathtaking journey of musical fireworks.
