Bhil Adivasis living on Dongri hills of Gujarat have a colourful and absorbing culture. They present Ramkatha with a local tinge. The distinguishing mark of Bhili Ramkatha is that present the two episodes, that apparently denigrate woman’s status i.e.i) Sita’s Agni Pariksha, Sita is asked to prove her chastity by walking through fire and ii) Lakshmana’s act of cutting nose of Surpanakha, Ravana’s sister, when she comes to seduce him. That demonstrates the high regard these Adivasis have for the status of women. There are some other variations from the traditional Ramayana which make the presentation more interesting.
