RAGA BHAIRAVI

Raga Bhairavi belongs to Bhairavi Thaat. It is a late morning Raag, and uses all the seven notes in the ascending and descending order. Rishabh, Gandhar, Dhaivat and Nishad are komal (flat) and Madhyam is shuddha (full). The derivative ragas out of this structure are grouped under the broad head of Bhairavi Thaat.

Bhairavi follows this scale: SA REk GAk MA DHAk NIk SA
SA NIk PA MA GAk REk SA
but is played with a number of added notes (Sindhu Bhairavi is one of the few traditional ragas with 12 notes in descent) and with zig-zag (vakre) ascents that are different in every school. Bhairavi is played in all styles, Qawwali, Thumri, Dadra, Hori, Tappa, Ashtapadi and less often in Khyal or in Dhrupad. In most gharanas it has become usual to end the concert by raga Bhairavi
