Veena comes from a family of musicians. Her father, late Pt. Shankar Shripad Bodas, was a disciple of Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. She was initiated into Khayal singing by her father and brother, late Pt. Kashinath Shankar Bodas. Padmashri Balwantrai Bhatt, late Pt. Vasant Thakar and late Gajananbua Joshi have also contributed to her education. The style she created for herself retains the fundamental values of Gwalior Gharana, while borrowing some-what from the Kirana and Jaipur Gharana. The Vidwas laud the authenticity of her music while most listeners are moved by its directness and intensity. Apart from khayal she is also sought after for her rich repertoire of bhajans (devotional songs). She has recordings under many leading labels. She has been awarded the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 1993. Veena has literally pellbounded the classical lovers all over the world. In India she has been participated in all prestigious concerts.
Raga Ahir Lalit Raga Ahir Lalit can be viewed as a mixture of Ahir Bhairav and Lalit (Shuddha Dhaivat variety). Ahir Bhairav can be seen in all from Dhaivat upward to Gandhar of the next octave, and Lalit from Gandhar to Dhaivat. This is a singular miscible pair of ragas. The two ragas do not retain their separate identities in the mixture, as in the case with Bhairav Bahar, Basanti Kedar and so on. Perhaps this is because Ahir lait is also a moorchhana of Bhairav Bahar. Bhairav to be madhyam, get Ahir lalit. This may have been what promoted Pt. Omkarnath Thakur to Christen it “Pranavendra Madhyam”. She likes the raga roop and see it both as mixture and as moorchhana. Veena as sung by only compositions in it. The madhyam laya/drut bandish is one of the layas. So Veena has sung it first in madhyam laya and later in drut laya, both are by Pt. Balwantrai Bhat “Bhavrang”.
