The ancient Vedic scriptures of India assert that very generation is indebted to their ancestors. These scriptures define ancestors as not only members of our own family lineage, but also teachers, mentors, role models, friends, who have contributed to our welfare in this or previous lives, Thus, we must recognize with gratitude these countless souls who have been the harbingers of grace, wisdom, protection, and love in our lives.
All scriptures across the faiths ascertain that we reap the good and bad fruits of the actions of our predecessors. Sometimes the effects of certain maleficent actions of our ancestors become unexplained obstacles in our path. They obstruct our progress and bring about ill-effects like childlessness and lack of success despite sincere and well directed efforts. The Indian philosophy terms this as Pitru Dosha; literally meaning the sins of the (fore) fathers. The Hindu religion prescribes certain methods to honor our ancestors an appease them by offering spiritual practices for their upliftment, such as meditation, chanting, mantra repetition, and prayer.
