The naat is a poem sung in praise of the holy Prophet Mohammed. It is part of the hallowed tradition of sacred music, and expresses the deep devotion of the believer. This collection brings together naats in the unforgettable voice of Begum Akhtar, renowned for her ghazals and thumris, and Mubarak Begum popular singer of yesteryears.
Begum Akhtar has left her mark as the foremost exponent of the romantic musical forms of ghazal, thumri and dadra. Born in 1914, she studied under Ustad Imdad Khan, the great sarangi player, and then under Ata Mohamed Khan. Later she started learning music from classical exponents like Mohammad Khan, Abdul Waheed Khan and finally, Ustad Jhande Khan Saheb. Her well-lived, painfilled voice was a perfect vehicle for the poetic lyrics she rendered with such mastery.
Mubarak Begum delighted music lovers with her mellifluous voice in the 50s and 60s, and had several hits to her credit in films like Humrahi and Susheela. However, she gradually faded out of the limelight and has now virtually stopped singing.
Saregama is proud to bring you this valuable collector’s item, culled from rare recordings and released for the first time on CD.
