Born in 1781 AD in a small village called Chhapaiya in North India Lord Swaminarayan renounced his home at the tender age of 11 to undertake his spiritual journey. After a seven years pilgrimage through Nepal. Eastern and Southern India he settled down in Gujarat.
Lord Swaminarayan then revolutionized society through spiritual and social reforms such as prohibiting female infanticide banning the practice of Sati promoting education among women stopping sacrificial killings in yagnas encouraging freedom from addictions like Tabacco etc. on 1 June 1830 Lord Swaminarayan left the physical sphere. His body was cremated in Gadhada. But long before he passed away he had indicated that he would continue to maintain his presence on earth through a succession of spiritual Gurus.
Lord Swaminarayan an entrusted Gunatitananda Swami an enlightened follower with the leadership of the movement since then the spiritual succession has continued in all its divinity through Bhagatji Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj, Yogiji Maharaj and at present Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
Today the Bochasanwasi Shree Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sansthan as the Swaminarayan movement is officially known is a hugely popular movement. It is commended for its charitable work amongst the economically & Socially disadvantaged and for its ruthless drive against social evils such as dowries narcotic drugs and alcoholism. It has a volunteer force that is 40,000 strong and is ever growing.
The Sanstha celebrates its 200th anniversary in Jan 2001. the present album celebrates this truly special occasion.
