Dwara- the gateway in a Hindu shrine as well as the household is seen as the dividing line between the inside and the outside, the sacred and profane, which separates the two realms and protects the positive ambiance of its interiors. To uphold the sanctity of the space and divine presence, doorways in the Hindu temples are guarded by Dwarapala or door guardians, who ward off any evil or negative energy that approaches the temple, and Dwaradevi, mostly river goddesses such as Ganga and Yamuna, who purify whatever and whoever enters the space.

According to the Hindu belief system, a home is equivalent to a temple in the sense that both the spaces house powers of the divine and are dwelling places for auspiciousness, wealth, wisdom, and other vital elements that enrich human life. Exotic India Art understands the importance of maintaining the sanctity of one’s abode, and to protect and nurture your home, we bring to you a one-of-its-kind Ashtalakshmi traditional wooden door, which is graced by the presence of the eight mighty forms of goddess Lakshmi and presents a high point of Indian wood carving and artistic skills.

Ashtalakshmi in Hindu tradition are the eight forms of goddess Lakshmi, each one of them capable of bestowing boons that can turn a pauper into a king. The sturdy wooden door is divided into two registers, decorated by flowing vegetation etched marvelously, which nestles the images of the Ashtalakshmi in eight independent frames.

The row on the left displays Gajalakshmi (goddess Lakshmi with elephants performing her consecration), Veera Lakshmi (the valorous Lakshmi), Dhanya Lakshmi (who provides food grain), and Adi Lakshmi (the primordial Lakshmi, with a flag in her hand as the emblem of the great goddess and her sway). On the right half of the wooden Ashtalakshmi door are Santan Lakshmi (the bestower of progeny), Vijaya Lakshmi (whose affections ensure eternal victories), Vidya Lakshmi (who brings the wealth of knowledge), and Dhana Lakshmi (the goddess who fetches riches).

In the rituals performed for attaining the favors of Mahalakshmi, the great Lakshmi from whom all these goddesses emerged, the devotee asks for the affection of Ashtalakshmi, so that her life is enhanced in all aspects. The presence of Ashtalakshmi on these doors marks their presence inside a house which drives away Daridrata (scarceness) and negativity.

The door handles attached to the wooden Ashtalakshmi doors are shaped like two majestic elephants, animals that symbolize royalty and abundance, thus acting as a fitting addition to the decoration of the awe-striking wooden door. On the top of the doors are the images of Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Saraswati, the trinity worshipped in Indian households for their abilities to bring a never-ending fecundity, auspiciousness, and wisdom into the lives of the residents.

The wooden door comes with a traditional Kundi (latch) whose muted metallic sheen matches the antiquated appearance of the door. A significant degree of detailing and artistic experience that went into the making of these doors can be understood from the seamlessness of the work done on individual carvings of the Ashtalakshmi, where each one of them is presented with distinctive attributes and exquisite forms.

Completeness of the minute details such as divinely smiling faces of the goddesses, balanced delineation of multiple limbs, and embellishment of the arches has endowed the doors with a superb aesthetic quality, which is an admirable virtue to be found in Indian objects of utility. Protected by Ashtalakshmi and purified by Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Saraswati, this traditional door will transform your home into a pious and positive space.
