This beautiful painting portrays Goddess Dhanalakshmi who is one among the eight forms of Maha Lakshmi, also known as Ashtalakshmi. She is revered as the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Those who work hard according to their Svadharma, she blesses them with wealth in terms of money, land and property and those who seek her blessings to progress in bhakti, she bestows her special blessings upon them by providing them with spiritual wealth (the right consciousness).
Here, the Goddess is depicted seated on a full-blown lotus flower which represents pure consciousness. Having four arms (chaturbhuja), she is attired in a beautiful red saree and bedecked with various gold ornaments. Each of her upper hands carry a lotus, the lower right hand is in Abhaya mudra, while the left hand shows the boon granting Varada mudra. The Prabhavali surrounding her is designed with typical South Indian intricate motifs and the use of bright and vivid colors make this painting appear eye-catching. Major part of the painting has been precisely coated with pure gold and perfectly embellished with red and green stones. Tanjore paintings are famous for this kind of ornamentation.
