"Meenakshi"- she whose eyes are shaped like fishes, is an epithet used for the supreme goddess Parvati, in the Southern states of India. Worshipped as "Amman"- mother, goddess Meenakshi is the Shakti of Shiva, his active, feminine counterpart, on whose benevolence the creation runs.
In this Tanjore painting, Meenakshi Amman appears as the divine bride of Shiva, attired beautifully, her hair in a distinctive updo, gold ornaments adorning her lithesome body, and floral garlands framing her graceful posture.
Two marble pillars supporting an imposing arch outline the image of the goddess Meenakshi. A bright red- a traditional Thanjavur color and a symbol of Shakti is used masterfully in the backdrop, providing a fitting stage for the universal mother to appear.
