The glory of Krishnaleela spread across a canvas in varied hues. The word ‘leela’ refers to the divine conduct of the Vishnu-avatara as the handsome Vrindavan cowherd. The pattachitra that you see on this page is a composite painting. It comprises multiple panels of varying size and shape, each a visual narrative of an episode in the chain of Krishnaleela.
The most ornate panel at the centre depicts the youth seducing four fair milkmaids of Vrindavan (gopiyaan) at once. A diamond-shaped frame, along the four edges of which are (clockwise from top left) Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Brahma, and Mahesha. The section described heretofore is flanked by columns of miniscule panels which contain the dashavatara.
Zoom in on each of the surrounding panels to appreciate the high-precision handiwork of the painter. The colour palette is diverse; the lines, expressive with rich detail. In fact, each panel qualifies to be a standalone painting. With the fact that pattachitras are made almost entirely by hand - from canvas to drawing instruments and paints - the painting becomes so much more valuable to the discerning art collector.
