Nagarjuna was one of the greatest scholars of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Founder of the madhyamaka philosophy, His Moolamadhyamakakarika is the definitive text on Buddhist centrism. The thangka that you see on this page depicts the great thinker captured in a moment of introspection.
The hands of Nagarjuna are in the dharmachakra mudra. The serenity of prolonged introspection is writ large on His beauteous face. Half-shut eyes; a tender, red-lipped mouth. The hoods of eight snakes of varied colours rise behind His halo. Indeed, the name Nagarjuna translates to ‘the one as brilliant (arjuna) as the snake (naga)’.
The brilliance of the traditional thangka is brought out to perfection in this seated Nagarjuna composition. Deep blue streams, wisps of pink and green across the heavens, and snow-capped glaciers in the background. A robe of gold and scarlet on the body of Nagarjuna, and in the foreground a merman making an offering to the saint.
