Devi Durga is a singular deity of the Hindu pantheon. Iconographically speaking, She is hardly ever associated with any other deity, including Her own husband. She is ferocious and invincible, attributes which are reflected in Her simhavahana (tiger-mount); yet there is unmistakable beauty and serenity on Her face. Finally, She is possessed of multitudinous arms, precisely eight in the Tanjore painting that you see on this page.
The Devi’s saree is the most striking aspect of this painting. It is made with luxuriant gold inlay over extensive gesso-work. The solid metallic gives off an irreplicable sheen, adding to the exquisiteness of the composition. Beneath a handsome brow, Her eyes are swimming with wisdom. The same is framed by a magnificent gold crown and thick curls cascading down Her shoulders.
Glassy emerald-coloured curtains above Durga’s head. These break the monotony of the yellow and gold colour palette. More of the inlaid gold is to be found on all four edges of the canvas, in the temple entrance-like structure framing the simhavahini ashtabhujadharini figure.
