The Ashtabula (eight-armed) Ganapati sits on a fierce lion, his white skin stark and bold against the black of the gloaming. He and the lion are enclosed within the gold-gilded arches that are a characteristic of the Tanjore style of paintings. One of his eight arms holds another lion in one hand, symbolizing strength and fearlessness. The rest of his arms hold a kalpavriksha sprig, the vina, a lotus blossom, a flower bouquet, and a pot of jewels. His elephant head and the lion’s head look straight ahead, valiant and daring, even as they stand on rocky ground that represents resilience.
His body still possesses the roundness and chubbiness of a child and yet his energy is divinely indomitable. Lord Ganesha can be seen wearing yellow clothes, the color of knowledge and learning while embodying happiness, peace, meditation, competence, and mental development. Exemplifying the color of spring, Ganesha embraces the pigment of the Sun, that activates the solar plexus. His frame and the lion’s paws are adorned in simple yet divine ornaments, dotted with precious stones and gilded in gold. This portrait is powerful in the way it depicts Lord Ganesha and the Tanjore style of paintings while bringing a certain sanctity to it all. The teakwood frame encasing this painting provides a perfect finish and an uncanny reason to welcome the Tanjore painting with open arms.
