Having first killed the mighty elephant Kuvalayapida, and then using its blood-stained tusks to kill the two demons Chanur and Mushtika, Krishna and Balarama finally enter the inner chambers of the king of all villains, Kansa. Dragging him by his hair, Krishna in this painting is determinedly posed to strike the villain dead with the same blood stained tusk. Balarama does not try to hit Kansa since it was his destiny to die at the hands of the Supreme Lord Krishna. Befittingly, the painting shows Kansa, defeated, poised to fall at Krishna's feet. At last he had realized where salvation lay....
One of Kansa's ministers can bee seen kneeling on the floor behind Kansa's elaborate throne, with his turban unfurled, symbolizing his fear. The two standing attendants however, remain oblivious to the gory happenings, perhaps knowing very well that the villain was only getting what was his due.
