Born as the first Manas-Putras (sons who originated from Mana or mind) of Lord Brahma, the four Sanata-Kumaras represent the pinnacle of pristine spiritual devotion to Sri Hari. From the moment of their birth, the four great beings devoted themselves to a life of austerities, asceticism, and Smarana (remembrance) of the blue-skinned Narayana. Vaishnava Puranas exalt their status as knowers of Vedic gyan and possessors of the nectar of Sri Hari’s name. In this mesmeric Tanjore painting, the Prema-bhakti, loving devotion of the eternally young Kumaras is presented in a heart-warming visual language. Placed within an antique teakwood frame and the traditional gold outline of Thanjavur artworks, the scene of the four Kumaras embracing their Lord reminds one of the Puranic legends, where they were halted at the doors of Vaikuntha by Jaya and Vijaya, which led them to curse the doorkeepers of Vishnu.
The all-knowing Narayana rushed to meet his devotees, who rejoiced in witnessing him in all his glory. A warm color palette rules the composition of this Tanjore painting, which has a beautiful backdrop of pale sky and towering architectural structures. Sri Vishnu, with skin as lovely as a fresh blue lily, stands in the center, in an immensely benevolent mood, with his mighty form sheltering the Kumaras like a divine father. Awe-struck and full of bliss, the Sanat Kumaras embrace, prostrate, and gaze at their Lord, who smiles compassionately, enlivening the painting and the ambiance with his heavenliness.
