When Bhagirath’s austerities were answered by goddess Ganga, her much-awaited descent on earth for salvaging the souls of Bhagirathi’s ancestors was made possible by Lord Shiva, the only being who could handle the bustling flow of Devi Ganga. This oil painting presents Shiva seated calmly on the Himalayas, worshipped by Bhagirathi.
Ganga as a celestial stream and a divine female appears in the upper section of the painting. Her holy waters create gushing waves while forming a faint image of Shiva-Linga around the blue-skinned Gangadhara (He who possesses Ganga).
