That the Mughals were fascinated by the elephant is a known fact. Also that each elephant was given a name, an exalted position and trained staff for proper upkeep is mentioned in biographical records.

This miniature depicts one such elephant from the royal stables. It is quite evident by the form of the elephant that it is a well-fed, well-kept animal. The substantial body is made to look bulkier by the dark shading on the outer edges. Similar shading in lighter tones is used along the trunk for contrary purpose. The artist has avoided over ornamenting the elephant, so that the focus remains on the form and not the decorative elements. The over-cloth has the typical 'boteh' motif of the Mughal embroidery, which is the only bright element of the composition. The mahaout, or the personal trainer sits atop the pachyderm with the ankush or the elephant goad in hand. In his bid to portray the massive form of the elephant, the artist has painted the man very small in proportion.

The background has a faint impression of the sky, whereas the ground is firmly depicted in green, grassy field.
