She is the annihilator of Mahishasura (Mahishasuramardini), one with the beautiful tresses, the daughter of Himalaya. Goddess Durga is the supreme divine feminine, the perfection of womanhood, the epitome of strength and beauty, a balance of paradoxical principles. Her unfathomable form has been beautifully presented in this acrylic on canvas by Anirban Seth. With an eye-catching yellow ruling the canvas, goddess Durga appears in the center, draped in a lovely yellow and red saree, with simple ornaments of bamboo and white flowers, used typically on statues of goddesses in Eastern India.
The dramatic depiction of Her face- large eyes, nose, and full lips brings a liveliness to the composition, which is supported by the lion entering the frame from the right and the buffalo (Mahisha) head lying on the left foreground. In the presence of Jagadamba (the mother of the Universe), life blooms all around, represented by the lotuses and the stream of blue, wrapped around the goddess as her clothing and journeying on the canvas vertically. The pillar of blue on the background can also be seen as Shiva, who unites with the goddess, causing a spurt of auspiciousness in the Universe.
