Running through the battlefield, she steps on Shiva lying underneath and halts for a second. The moment of the cosmic force of Kali coming to a pause has been beautifully captured in this painting by Jaydeva Moharana. Borrowing the dark beauty of Kali, the backdrop has been painted by the artist in a pitch-black hue, symbolizing the night (Ratri) which is ruled by the mighty goddess.
Under an arched sacred structure made of curving vines, the goddess stands, adorned by a traditional crown, jeweled necklaces, and a garland of skulls. Her tresses sway marvelously, while the head in her hand moves in an opposite direction, with awe expressed on its face, adding a bewildering drama and dynamism to the scene.
Enchanted by the prowess and loveliness of the blood that trickles from the mouth of his beloved, Shiva-Mahakala lies in a pose that suggests immense stillness and surrender, grasping and appreciating the supreme mother in all her glory.
