Also known as Shri, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Parvati and Saraswati, form a divine triad known as “Tridevi” which represents the powerful feminine energy behind the manifestation of the entire material world. Goddess Lakshmi is the eternal consort of Lord Vishnu, and thus assists Him in maintaining the universe. She is also revered as the Goddess of fortune and blesses the individual souls with prosperity, wealth and property. Not only is she the bestower of material wealth, but she also showers her special blessings upon those who seek the path of the Absolute Truth.
In this Tanjore painting, Goddess Lakshmi stands gracefully placing her right leg forward, while the left one slightly bending behind. Attired in a bright green saree, she holds different items in her four arms. Each of her upper arms holds a full-blown lotus flower which symbolizes the purity of consciousness. With her lower left hand, she holds a pot full of gold coins, while the right hand is in Abhaya Mudra (the gesture of fearlessness). Bedecked with several ornaments on her fair complexion, she appears just like the glowing sun. An aureole behind her jeweled crown can also be seen. The work of typical Indian motifs and patterns designed on the above Prabhavali is really appreciable. Two lampstands have been decorated in front to glorify her. This painting has been majorly embellished with 24K gold studded with sequences of shining stones.
