Goddess Lakshmi, along with Goddesses Saraswati and Parvati, form the divine triad known as ‘Tridevi’ which is responsible for the creation, maintenance and destruction of the material world. Lakshmi is the eternal consort of Lord Vishnu and is always engaged in His loving service in His abode called Vaikuntha, and thus assists Him in sustaining the entire Universe. Revered as the Goddess of fortune, she blesses her devotees not only with material wealth but also with spiritual wealth to advance them in the path of bhakti.
Here, the epitome of beauty, Goddess Lakshmi is seated on a throne in Ardhapadmasana; the left leg goes down toward the floor, while the right one stays folded above. As she sits in this posture, the pleats of the saree that she wears spreads between her legs and form the shape of the multiple blades of a fan. The saree is golden in color and has beautiful motifs on it. She is adorned with heavy ornaments such as a long neck piece, sharp earrings, a nose ring, bracelets and anklets. Each of her two upper arms hold a lotus flower, the lower right hand shows the boon granting Varada Mudra, while the other is in Abhaya Mudra from which a stream of gold coins can be seen coming down. A tilted pot filled with such coins is around her left arm which pours down multiple coins at a time. Finally, the huge crown on her head justifies her exalted personality. The intricate patterns of the Prabhavali surrounding her give this painting an extra beautification. Every bit of this painting is embellished with 24 Karat gold long with shining stones which is the key feature of Tanjore artwork.
