Goddess Saraswati, the bestower of knowledge (both material and spiritual), is associated with Rajas Guna i.e., mode of passion. Being the internal potency or feminine energy of Lord Brahma, who is born from the navel of Lord Vishnu on a lotus, she assists him in creating the material world. The term Saraswati is a blend of two Sanskrit words “Sara” which means “Essence” and “Swa” means “Self”. Thus, Goddess Saraswati is the one who helps the individual souls to realize the essence of self, in other words, the importance of self-realization.
This Tanjore painting depicts the Goddess of music, arts, culture and speech seated on a full-blown lotus in an ocean. Despite of the fact that a lotus grows in dirty water, it still remains clean and untouched. Thus, it symbolizes purity of consciousness. She sits in Ardhapadmasana; her right leg goes down while the left one remains folded above. Clad in a beautiful silk saree and her molten gold complexioned body ornamented with several jewels, Goddess Saraswati slightly tilts her delicate neck towards one side and her eyes filled with mercy for her devotees speak the words of love. Her four arms represent the four heads of Lord Brahma. The upper left and lower right hand hold a musical instrument called ‘Veena’ from which the sweet rhythm of devotion for the Supreme God flows out. The upper right hand holds a rosary of crystal beads which emphasizes on the importance of chanting the holy names of God, and the lower left hand holds Vedas that guide us to know about the Absolute Truth. Every aspect of Goddess Saraswati brings us to the loving devotion of God.
