A masterpiece of Tanjore painting displaying Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of eloquent speech and melodious music. Along with Parvati and Lakshmi, she forms the divine triad known as ‘Tridevi’ which is responsible for the creation, maintenance and destruction of the material world. Goddess Saraswati is the eternal consort and energy of Lord Brahma, thus, she assists him in creating the material world and starting the cycle of repeated births and deaths.
The Goddess is seated gracefully on a throne in Ardhapadmasana; the left leg folded above while the right one placed on the throne. Her attire in a perfectly pleated silk saree and adornment with a flower garland around her shoulders and several jewels on her fair complexioned body shine throughout the painting. Her four hands carrying different items represent the four hands of Lord Brahma, the creator of this material world. Veena, a musical instrument held in her upper left and lower right hands represents the rhythmic flow of the knowledge of self-realization. The rosary of crystal beads in her upper right hand emphasizes the importance of chanting the holy names of the Supreme God Vishnu or Krishna, and the Vedas (Scriptures) held in her lower left hand symbolizes the knowledge of the Absolute Truth, which is the goal of the human life. This painting brings about the real essence of the aesthetic artwork of South India; the intricate patterns and motifs in the arch along the borders and the coating of the icon with pure gold and studded stones.
