The feminine counterpart of Sri Vishnu, one of the seven mother-goddesses or the “Sapta-Matrikas” of Hindu-Tantra tradition, goddess Vaishnavi in this Patachitra is a powerful female divinity, worshipped by Tantrikas independently as the enabler of Vishnu who preserves the entire creation.
She is also called “Narayani”, the counterpart of Narayana and Shakti (energy) who sustains Srishti (creation). Since she is the feminine aspect attached to Vishnu, she is naturally related to Sri-Lakshmi, the goddess of auspiciousness and wealth, who is the wife of Vishnu-Narayana.
This goddess Vaishnavi Pattachitra, bordered with pleasing yellow, red and white hued floral patterns and parrot motifs in bright red shade over yellow shows the goddess seated on a imperial platform, under a Chatri like structure borrowed from the royal palaces of India.
Devi Vaishnavi is draped in attire of pleasing red, pink and green, bedecked with exquisite ornaments and has four arms in which she holds the Vaishnava attributes- conch, discus, mace and lotus. Her skin is of a turmeric color, which looks alluring in the center of the artistic embellishments of the Patachitra.
Detailing on this goddess Vaishnavi Patachitra is discernible in the lush green vines that are drawn in the background as well as the clothing and platform of the Devi. An aesthetically well-endowed piece of painting, this goddess Vaishnavi Patachitra with watercolor against Tussar silk is a beautiful pick from the rich state of Odisha.
