Not many are aware that the gentle Devi Lakshmi has a wrathful aspect. She is named Siddhalakshmi, which translates to the Lakshmi of accomplishment (‘siddhi’). She is a Tantric deity, which could be gleaned from the geometric yantra-esque shapes against which Her figure is projected. Like Her cosmic mother Durga, She is the dashabhujadharini (the one possessed of ten arms).

Devi Siddhalakshmi has all the appearance of a wrathful, Tantric deity. From a multitude of crowned and conjoined heads emerges the head of Lord Shiva, Her husband. In Her hands She wields a plethora of weapons with which She fights off the enemies of dharma, one of whose severed heads She seizes by the hair in one of Her hands. In Her right anteriormost hand is a pristine kapala (skullcup), without which the iconography of a Tantric deity would be incomplete.

The feet of Siddhalakshmi is balanced upon the great palms of Lord Shiva. He kneels upon the breast of a realised mortal, a symbol of the categorical superiority of the divine. Vivid crimson, ochre, and green make up the palette of this richly coloured Siddhalakshmi watercolour, which - hung up on one of your walls - would be sure to turn a few heads in its direction.
