The Param-Brahman, supreme reality according to the Hindu belief system manifests itself in various forms, as gods, goddesses, humans, fauna, and flora and participates in the universe's creation, development, and conclusion. The Trideva, Tridevis, and other beings are a manifestation of that singular divine truth, thus they all are but one. Visually presenting this profound philosophy, this Tanjore painting enlightens the mind with the mighty roopa of Hari-Hara, the unified form of Vishnu and Shiva, preservation and destruction incarnate, bound together as two forms of the same reality. Majestically adorned, Hari-Hara stands against a rich red backdrop, with Hari depicted with a beautiful blue hue and Hara having a sandalwood paste skin.
Elongated Kiritamukuta of Hari and Jatamukuta of Shiva infuse the image with a grandeur, which is enhanced by the profusion of 24-karat gold on the canvas. Heavy drapery, sturdy gold pillars, and a balance of colors give this Thanjavur painting a distinct allure. In the foreground of the artwork, Garuda and Nandikeshwara stand in Namaskara mudra, filling the composition with their pristine devotion. Unwaveringly gazing at the onlooker with their lotus eyes and smiling knowingly, Hari-Hara seems to be unveiling the occult knowledge of the universe with their presence.
