An enchanting Tanjore painting, this two-feet artwork is a divine representation of Lord Kartikeyan or Murugan, accompanied by his twin Shakti or feminine counterparts- Devasena and Valli. The Mayura throne of Bhagwan Karttikeya has been transformed into a grand seat, with the feathers of a peacock unfurled, outlining an imposing golden aureole.
A youthful, four-armed Murugan is in the center of the scene, emanating a heavenliness from his roopa. Red- the color of valor and power is used in the backdrop of the three deities, who are attended by two male attendants, walking on each side, holding the royal insignia- Chattra (umbrella) and Dhwaja (flag) of Murugan. The Mayura mirrors the regalia and potent presence of his Lord and grips the neck of a serpent (representation of quelling an enemy) in its claws.
The image of Karttikeya with Devasena and Valli is a powerful vision, of the coming together of Murugan's supreme wisdom with his Iccha (willpower) and Kriya (active energy), together with whom he protects and guides his devotees toward an ideal life.
