Whoever sees this painting sees the absolutely incredible embellishment with pure gold along with the sequences of tiny stones to give an extra beautification to the artwork. Tanjore style paintings are characterized by this unique description of the devotional icons. Here, Lord Kartikeya, the God of war and the noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati is portrayed in the most magnificent way. Lord Kartikeya is considered an important deity in Shaivism receiving whose mercy, the individual souls (jivas) can get on the path to the Absolute Truth. There is a pastime in which he killed the great demon Taraka, depicting that those who take his shelter with full faith can get rid of the demons sitting in their hearts (lust, ego, anger).
Surrounded by a gratifying Kirtimukham Prabhavali designed with typical Indian motifs, the youthful warrior god stands tall on an elevated platform with grace. His fair-complexioned body adorned with several ornaments glows throughout the painting. He is attired in a perfectly pleated pitambar (bright yellow) dhoti down to his ankles. A heavy and beautiful flower garland is worn around his strong shoulders. He places his left hand on his waist and holds the javelin weapon in his right hand. His divine spear, known as Vel (it represents his shakti) is also placed near the other weapon. A soft and gentle smile on his face shows his extremely merciful nature towards his devotees. This mesmerizing yet powerful form of Lord Kartikeya is very pleasing for everyone to see. The intricate detailing of the surrounding arches is undeniably praiseworthy. This aspect of Tanjore paintings makes it stand out from the ordinary ones.
