Kamadhenu or Surabhi in Hindu tradition is the celestial wish-fulfilling cow, who emerged from the Samudra-Manthana and is revered as the mother of all bovine creatures. In the Ramayana and Srimad Bhagavada, Kamadhenu is associated with Rishi Kashyapa, with minor variations, and is said to have resided in his hermitage. Drawing on this textual tradition, Tanjore paintings have developed Sage Kashyapa worshipping Kamadhenu in his ashrama as a popular theme, which is represented in this superb artwork. Placed within a sturdy and antiquated teakwood frame, this Tanjore painting appears to be a diorama, thanks to the technique of embossing and a profusion of 24-karat gold in embellishment.
A rich red background provides a fitting contrast to the brilliantly glowing divine Kamadhenu, whose form is empowered by the presence of various Hindu gods and goddesses, symbolizing the heavenliness of the Gau-mata. In the foreground is her calf, who lunges toward her mother, infusing the painting with an innocent liveliness. On the right side of the viewer, under a lush tree populated by the wildlife of the hermitage is sage Kashyapa, sitting in an individual shrine, adorned in the manner of an ascetic king, presenting Kamadhenu ritual offerings. Filled with his devotional aura and the divine form of Kamadhenu, this Tanjore painting is a potent source of auspiciousness and abundance in any space it inhabits.
