Tanjore paintings stand out from other ordinary paintings due to their special depiction of devotional icons embellished with pure gold coating and bright colors. Similar is this painting of Lord Ganesha that appears real and extremely beautiful. He is the noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati who is often worshiped at the start of every auspicious ceremony and rite, for which he is known as Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles). He also provides the seekers of the Absolute Truth with the ultimate knowledge of spirituality which is the very goal of the human life.
He who has the head of an elephant and the body of a human, Gajanana, sits on a gigantic rat (his mount) who is adorned with a cloth on his back and bells around his neck and is always ready to serve his lord at any moment. He lifts his head and sees him with immense love in his eyes. The lord sits with four arms (chaturbhuja) carrying different items; his two upper hands hold an axe and the noose (pasha) while the lower hands hold his broken tusk and the trunk turning left. He is clad in yellow garments and ornamented with several jewels including the huge crown on his head. The traditional arch designed on the top gives the essence of the South Indian artwork. Every bit of this painting has been decorated with the sequences of red and green stones along the outlines which add to its beautification.
