This Tanjore painting portrays the noble and loyal child of Lord Shiva and other Parvati. Having the head of an elephant and the body of a human with four hands (chaturbhuja), Lord Ganesha is seated on a gigantic rat (his mount) with a curved tail. A huge and beautifully decorated Kirtimukham throne is placed on the back of the rat on which the lord is seated in Padmasana. The bright yellow garments shine on his fair complexioned body and he holds an elephant goad, an axe, his broken tusk, and his trunk turning towards left in his four arms. Elaborately adorned with several jewels and a finely carved crown on his head, the lord appears just like the glowing sun.
Lord Ganesha is also known as Vighnaharta because he removes all the obstacles from the path of success in the lives of his devotees. This is the reason why in the Vedic civilization, he is often worshiped at the start of every auspicious ceremony and rite. Here, two of his devotees or sevakas can be seen serving him with love and devotion. One of them offers him a potful of laddoos and the other one fans him with tassels. The lord is regarded as the patron of science and arts, and thus, whoever worships him with unmotivated love, receives a great joy. But there lies his special blessing for those who seek the path of the Absolute Truth, he bestows them with the ultimate knowledge for their spiritual advancement which is the very goal of the human life.
