Lord Ganesha is the sweet and noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, who is worshiped in the festival of Deepavali along with Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati. He removes all the obstacles from the path of success (both material and spiritual) of his devotees and is thus worshiped at the start of very auspicious ceremony and rite. Known as the patron of sciences and arts, he also grants the devotees the ultimate knowledge of the Absolute Truth so that they can come out of the cycle of repeated births and deaths, and enjoy permanent happiness in the spiritual world.
This is a real jaw-dropping Tanjore painting that gloriously portrays Ganapati, the leader of all the Ganas (attendants of Lord Shiva) seated on a huge throne. He has a head of an elephant and the body of a human and sits in Ardhapadmasana having four arms (chaturbhuja). Clad in a pitambar (yellow) dhoti down to his ankles, he is bedecked with several gold ornaments and adorned with a flower garland around his shoulders and a huge crown on his head. With his two upper arms, he holds an elephant goad and the noose. The lower right hand holds his broken tusk for which he is also known as “Ekadanta” (having one whole tusk). His trunk is turned towards left which is held by the lower left hand. Two of his servants are worshiping the lord and offering him flowers. Ganesha’s mount “Mooshak” can be seen sitting near his master’s lotus feet eating a laddoo. Up in the sky, two apsaras blow bugles to honor the Lord. The entire painting evokes a feeling of a grand celebration. Also, the way it has been decorated with 24 Karat gold and shining stones enhances the beauty of the artwork.
