Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared in Vrindavan as an ordinary child to please His devotees. His uncommon activities were always an astonishment for all the inhabitants of Vraja. They all loved Krishna with their heart and soul, and He in return, gave them the highest form of pleasure. One day, Krishna intelligently convinces His father Nanda Maharaja and the other inhabitants of Vrindavan to take the blessings of the sacred Govardhan Hill rather than the God of rains Indra. Indra out of pure arrogance, decides to show his rage over the entire Vrindavan and ruthlessly pours down a heavy rainwater and thunder. Then comes the true savior, Lord Krishna, for the rescue of all the inhabitants including the animals.
This painting illustrates the moment when survival of the innocent people of Vrindavan was at risk due to Lord Indra’s wrath and revenge. Krishna, being the most powerful, lifts the huge Govardhan Hill with His left hand and brings all of them underneath it. When this happens, everyone gets relieved and amazed at the same time. As you can see, the holy Surabhi Cows look up at Krishna with so much love and the people including Nanda Maharaja fold their hands before Him. Mother Yashoda’s eyes are filled with great affection toward her sweet child Krishna. Krishna on the other hand, adorned with several jewels, a flower garland and a peacock feather on His head, is simply enjoying this pastime. He places His divine flute to His lips and plays upon it, and hearing its sweet sound, everyone enters into a state of trance. The way the artist has brought life into this picture is praiseworthy and anyone who sees this painting associates with the sacred land of Vraja.
