Chaturbhujadhari Lord Shiva is seated on the back of His faithful companion, Nandi, the bull. In His posterior left hand is the dynamic silhouette of the quadruped, part of the Pashupatinath iconography of Shiva. Nandi turns His head back to nuzzle the inner thigh of His Lord and Master. The gentle, lotus-wielding Parvati is seated on His lap.
Diametrically opposite to their traditional iconography, this Shiva-Parvati painting depicts a fair Shiva and a midnight-complexioned Parvati. Every aspect of their attire and adornment, as well as the crowns on their respective heads, are made of embellished gold layering over gesso work.
More of this metallic gesso work is to be found around the edge of the circular backrest of their throne, the adornment on Nandi’s glacial body, and all four edges of the Tanjore painting. In fact, this pure gold-and-stones gesso work is the hallmark of traditional Tanjore art.
