The women of elite Indian households rarely went in public. Their delicate beauty was sheltered for the eyes of their beloveds, for whom they adorned themselves with “Solah Sringaar” or 16 kinds of ornaments. In this oil painting, we are introduced to three women. Two of them are bangle sellers who sit on the floor, offering various bangle sets to the lady in yellow, who is seated on a rug against a bolster, hinting at her superior status. With a luxurious background and rich colors, this is a rare peek into the interiors of a woman’s chamber and her heart.
