Maha Tripurasundari- the great goddess who is the most beautiful in three realms, is a mighty Mahavidya (great wisdom) in Hindu-Tantra, and one of the most powerful aspects of the divine feminine. Revered by all gods, goddesses, and humans, Tripurasundari is the origin, middle, and end of creation, the energy that courses through all beings, and the bestower of all material and spiritual boons. Often worshipped as an aspect of Parvati, Tripurasundari is accompanied in her hymns and images by Shiva as Kameshwara, the Lord of Desire, a virtue that is at the root of all creationary processes.
Lalitasahasranama- a thousand names of Lalita or Tripurasundari describe the goddess in the most beautiful manner, a description which seems to have inspired this acrylic on canvas.
Goddess Tripurasundari is enthroned on a seat of jewels, which rests on Rudra, Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. On a lifeless form of Shiva (called Shava, a state which the god attains in the absence of the goddess, marking the vitality of Shakti, the primordial goddess), Tripurasundari and Kameshwara sit, gazing at each other, adorned ethereally. The great goddess is attired in red and golden, and has a vivid red hue, symbolizing the cosmic Shakti or energy that flows in her form.
In her four hands, Devi Tripurasundari carries Ikshudanda (sugarcane) which is an attribute of Kama (the god of love and passion), Ankusha (goad), Paasha (rope), and pink and blue waterlilies and lotuses, which symbolize love, passion, youth and beauty. The contrast between attributes that instill desire or Kama and those that restrain it, suggests the powers of Tripurasundari, who causes and controls desire, to maintain the balance of the world.
Above the chattra or regal umbrella of the goddess is a tree blossoming beautifully and populated by peacocks which appear lovely hidden in the deep green and white of the tree. On each side of the throne are goddesses Lakshmi in delicate pink and Saraswati in white, carrying lotuses and Veena and a fly whisk to pay obeisance to the supreme goddess.
The ambiance of spring that is infused in the painting hints at the auspiciousness and bliss that enwraps the Loka or realm of Tripurasundari, the most alluring goddess who is the sovereign one for all beings.
