In this brilliant painting, the slayer of demon Mahishasura, Goddess Durga is depicted in her most powerful and furious form. Mahishasura was a buffalo demon who raged wars against the demigods. Associated with protection, motherhood, sustenance, and destruction, Goddess Durga is considered as the one who furiously fights against the demons to restore Dharma on the earth. She is a humble servant of Lord Hari, who acts as Maya Devi (illusory energy) to test the individual souls in the material world to bring them into the abode of the Lord, which is the place of no miseries.
The Shakti personified Goddess Durga having ten arms carrying different weapons, riding on a lion (her divine mount) having a ferocious face, exposed teeth, and sharp claws, exhibits her unimaginable potency. The ten arms represent that she protects her devotees from all directions. She holds a conch shell, a discus, a sword, a thunderbolt, a snake, a mace, a bow and arrow, and a trident with them. The huge jeweled crown on her head represents her exalted personality. With rage in her eyes, she places one leg on the lion and the other on the hand of Mahishasura, and with the trident, she re-establishes the power of good over evil. This day is celebrated as Vijayadashmi. Every bit of this painting has been precisely embellished with 24 Karat gold and infused with bright traditional South Indian color. This makes it aesthetic.
