The Ama Dablam is an interesting peak of the Nepal range of the Himalayas. In Nepalese, the names translates to ‘mother’s (ama) necklace (dablam)’. The painting that you see on this page, a predominantly bitone oil with a hint of colour in the foreground, explains the epithet.
The central peak is surrounded by ridges on either side, which resemble the open arms of a mother. The hanging glacier betwixt them looks like a necklace on her bosom. The rock is executed with minimalistic strokes of the brush dipped in white, followed by charcoal. The sea of fog swimming amidst them is a colloidal blend of the same colours.
In the foreground is a stretch of land, actually traversed by four Sherpas. Colourful clothing; basketfuls of verdant produce on their backs. They are slowly walking towards the woods, the coniferous silhouettes of those tall trees captured in minute detail by the artist.
