Lord Krishna’s divinity is such that it sweetens even the harshest of hearts. When he appears in the form of Bal Krishna, he is saccharine and innocent. With a lotus-like complexion and around, loving face, this Tanjore painting portrays Lord Krishna divinely. It is said that childless couples who pray to Navaneetha Krishna will be blessed with what they so deeply desire.
In this painting, he sits on a chaise lounge, smiling slightly but full of joy as he partakes in one of his childhood pastimes: eating butter. He holds a pot full of butter in one hand while he eats them with his other hand. His face is round and childish in the painting, looking sweeter than any nectar. He is surrounded by two female attendants who bring him offerings. They wear sarees of red and green silk. Along with Krishna’s ornaments, their sarees to are embossed with gold and inlaid with colorful stones. One of them is holding a parrot, who is seen as a symbol of devotion and enduring love, which is what Krishna inspired in his devotees. The golden arches and the precious stones that are so custom to Tanjore paintings give this scene a feeling of celestialness.
