This is a perfect example of severe chromatic variations with sober colours juxtaposed with the opulence of bright colours. The magic is not having them clash. The black and white share the visual space with burnt orange and peacock blue not a subtle contrast by any means. The face of the old man is rendered with remarkable expressiveness; the aging lines and wrinkles, although sharply drawn, lend character to it. The blue of the turban and the short orange jama is offset by a black/white scarf and a patka respectively. He holds a long stick in an odd fashion. Nothing about him would seem amiss if it wasn't for the footwear. The short pointed boots reflect a European impact, or the artist being inspired by the European pictures brought by the travelers.
The painting is a mixture of various contrary elements coming together harmoniously.
