Draped in a gold saree smattered with red flowers, Goddess Lakshmi sits in the form of Gajalakshmi, flanked by two white elephants as they luster her with water. Sitting in a padmasana on a raised dais, she showers out a steady stream of gold, blessing her devotees. Gajalakshmi and the elephants are both symbols of strength, prosperity and patience—all qualities that are considered to be good and noble.
When her followers bring her offerings and pray to her, they pray for opulence, riches, dignity, and much more. During the millennium that saw devas and asuras work against each other to churn the great cosmic ocean, Gajalakshmi rose out as a result. Since both Brahma and Shiva had taken something for themselves, Lakshmi became the consort to Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the new cosmos. However, she remained an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. She offered her prayers daily and brought a thousand flowers to his idol. She still prayed to Lord Vishnu as well, along with Gajendra the elephant. However, he was slow due to his girth, unable to worship speedily. Thus, Lord Vishnu asked Lakshmi to pray for both of them. So, she took the form of Gajalakshmi to comply.
