Lakshmi is the Shakti (energy) that runs the Universe. She sustains life through the earth's fertility, empowers virtuous deeds through money, and dispels negativity with her auspiciousness. In this watercolor on paper, Lakshmi or Laxmi (Nepalese), is presented as the sovereign of the earth, Sri or auspiciousness personified, and Jaggadhatri or the mother of the Universe.
Adorned like a divine queen, Laxmi Mata sits in the center of the canvas, on a blooming lotus that symbolizes divinity. Her crown is embellished with the Sun and the Moon, she is wrapped in a red saree and dangles her leg in the regal pose or Lalitasana. Laxmi Mata holds a pot of food in hand and a ladle in another, representing the powers of the supreme mother as Annapurna, an aspect which is popularly associated with Parvati, but also resonates with Lakshmi, who is the provider and nurturing deity.
Under the arched structure of Laxmi Mata’s palace stand Parvati and Sarawati as the heavenly attendants and guardians of her space. Food grains and fruits are placed around the goddess to express her nourishing powers. In the foreground of the artwork, miniature temple structures, boats and faint figures of devotees create the scene of a Ghat or riverbank, of a sacred pilgrimage spot.
The towering image of Laxmi appears to be the tutelary deity or Ishta Devi of the region, the Adhishtatri or sovereign goddess, guarding and nurturing those who approach her lotus feet.
