Virahini Nayika in Indian culture is the lovesick heroine, who is troubled by the pains of separation. The waned state of Nayika’s heart is narrated visually in this oil painting which shows her dressed in a white Kasavu sari and minimal ornaments. Her hair, her sari, and the condition of her house combine to create a picture of unkemptness. Sringaar- ornamentation and the emotion of Sringaar (romance) eludes the Nayika. From the Kasavu and the coconut trees in the background, we are informed that Nayika resides in Kerala.
