The peacock is an Indian bird of unequalled beauty. Its body is a deep jewel blue; its plumage, a riot of ruby and emerald tones. The traditional Indian painting that you see on this page captures the natural beauty of this gorgeous bird in the Tanjore idiom.
The peacock turns its long, gracious neck and buries its shapely little beak into its plumage. From its back emerges its plumage, a feast for the eyes. Made of straight-line embellishment of gold upon gold, it is made by layering carefully cut leaves of pure gold over wide swathes of gessowork.
Towards the ends of each line of plumage, is embedded a row of glittering red and green stones. These resemble rubies and emeralds, and the natural colour of the peacock’s inimitable plumage.
