That this goddess has benevolent and malevolent traits is proved by the two sets of hands. If in her left hands, she holds a weapon and a severed head, the two right hands are raised in 'abhaya' and 'varada' gestures. Her face is painted in profile a bulging, blood shot eye, tongue hanging out and the blood smeared expression, add to her fearful look. A garland of skulls, a girdle of human hands and a serpent waistband adorn her body besides other ornaments. Her long hair let loose, cover her entire back.
A supine Shiva lies on a leopard skin, tiger skin for clothing and serpents for ornaments. After killing demons and drinking their blood, Kali loses all control and kills randomly until Shiva intervenes. He lies there as a physical obstacle in the path of destructive Kali.
The scene is set in her favorite haunt, the cremation ground, where bats and vultures can be seen. Places associated with her heighten Kali's fearsome nature.
