Of Krishna’s life in ihaloka in general, and Vrindavan in particular, Radha was an integral part. She was the object of His love and passion and leela, and commanded His heart like none of the other milkmaids who were all in love with Him. The watercolour that you see on this page is a visual narrative, a celebration of their playfulness and togetherness.

Moments ago, they were seated together on the bed laid out in the verandah of the marble palace. It is a warm afternoon: the skies are clear, a variety of birds roosting in silence in the canopies and on the terrace above the lovers’ heads, lotuses blooming right next to their bed. Something Her Lord had said has upset Radha and She steps down from the verandah, turning back to look at the effect Her gesture took on Him. Needless to say, He is saddened and, as such, earnestly reaches out to Her with an arm outstretched.

Could the Lord not pin His beloved down beneath Him with one fell stroke of His arm? Could He not summon all His wrath and command Radha into submission? Yet, in all gentleness, He simply beseeches with Her. This watercolour is an image in loverlike tenderness and emotion.
