Celebrating the regalia and divinity of Krishna, in the Tamil region of India, a unique aspect of the fluting Lord is worshipped by his devotees, known as “Rajagopalaswamy”- “the royal Gopal Lord”. In this form, Sri Krishna appears as a young, alluring being, standing in a pleasant posture, holding Dhanush (bow), bana (arrow), and his murli. This four-feet Tanjore painting depicts the sanctum of Rajagopalaswamy, who stands on a golden pedestal, attired beautifully in yellow clothes, ornaments, and a splendid hairdo. His Gau mata (cow) stands behind him, ornamented and accompanied by her calf, creating a lovely imagery of maternal affection on the canvas.
Manifesting a royal being, Krishna as Rajagopala is complemented by his twin wives- Rukmini and Satyabhama, who stand on each side, on individual platforms, holding lotus blossoms that appear as supple as their forms. Together with the two emanations of Sridevi and Bhudevi, Rajagopalaswamy in this painting is Sri Vishnu himself, the great preserver of the Universe.
